Schools In Session on Veterans’ Day
Instead of taking the day off to observe Veterans’ Day, Cambridge City School District students will be in session on Monday, Nov. 11, to learn about and participate in Veterans’ Day activities.

Cambridge City Schools will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 7 for a staff professional development day and on Friday, Nov. 8, to observe the Veterans’ Day holiday.

High School students, Middle School students, and the fourth and fifth graders from the Intermediate School will attend the Veterans’ Day parade and ceremony in downtown Cambridge on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024.

The parade will step off at 10 a.m. from the Municipal Courthouse on Highland Ave. and proceed down Wheeling Ave. to the Guernsey County Courthouse. The Cambridge High School Marching Band will be performing in the parade.

Following the parade, students will attend the annual ceremony honoring our Veterans that takes place on the Courthouse lawn.
“I believe part of what we should do as a school district is to help our students understand what being a Veteran means and why we celebrate Veterans Day and Memorial Day,” Superintendent Dan Coffman said. “One of the ways we can help them understand is to provide appropriate education and bring them to the ceremony and parade.”

Jim Gibson from Guernsey County Veterans Council will visit the Primary School on Nov. 6 to do a presentation about the United States Flag and the importance of Veterans’ Day for the district’s Kindergarten through second graders. On Veterans’ Day, Primary students will participate in Veterans’ Day activities in their classrooms.

Intermediate School third graders will be watching an educational video and participating in classroom activities related to Veterans’ Day.
Cambridge High School and Middle School have both been designated as Purple Star Schools by the Ohio Department of Education for their commitment to serving military-connected students and family.

To be successful in school and when transitioning between school settings, Ohio’s military-connected youth require support to ensure their unique social, emotional, and academic needs are met. The Purple Star award signifies that the Middle School and High School have demonstrated commitment to serving these students and families.

Cambridge School District supports military-connected students and families in many ways including a Military Connection page on the district’s website that provides easy access to resources both within the school and in the local community.

Cambridge City School District also started a Military Honor Wall on its website that highlights alumni, and current students that have enlisted, and staff members who served or are currently serving in the military.
